Cee Lo Accused of Racism After Comment on ‘The Voice,’ Aguilera Cuts Fan Favorite

Cee Lo responded to angry tweets after viewers heard him say, “Phil Collins has a lot of soul for a white guy.” He was only lightly challenged on the show itself about the remark. Christina Aguilera cut fan favorite Jesse Campbell. Her power to do so came from a new Voice rule allowing judges to instantly cut contestants before viewers vote.

    How is that racist? WTF

    • Greeneyedmonster

It’s not. People need to lighten up. No pun intended.

  • Kate miller

I think the media throws that word out there too much. Racism is real and painful and hurtful. HE WAS NOT BEING RACIST.

  • Guest

    It’s racist, people!

  • Jerome72

Racist seems a little too harsh for this situation.

  • Yoshimisan

I’m sick of phony outrage in this country. This is a non-issue.

  • Young7060

How come it’s not racist when a black man says it?

    • KeepItReal

Soul has always been referenced to blacks and the way they sing.  It’s been called soul music since forever.  Stop acting like you don’t know…

      • JuanM52

I dont think that was the question but good try on an answer.

        • MESSAGE!!!

Ahhhh, you can really shut it up. My response wasn’t towards you anyway. Sit Down!!!

      • MESSAGE!!!

Ank you @ KeepItReal….@YOUNG7060 sounds so damn retarded. I saw The Voice last night, and I had a feeling that this was going to be a big deal. As soon as Ce-Lo said it, which he WAS NOT being racist, Adam Levine turned around to him & said “wait, what do you mean by that? Then the bias crowd started booing. And since Adam is clearly an audience favorite on that show, I just knew it was gone be some isht. Man whatever…should I say that Christina A was being racist when she had made the choice to elimante the black dude Jermy when he was clearly the best on her team? NO…POINT BLANK PERIOD!!!

        • W82TXT

@9e85fdfa7c03c6bec3935472c1aff5f1:disqus Literacy would be really helpful right now. BTW he should say sorry if he upset his own fans.

          • W82txt

@9e85fdfa7c03c6bec3935472c1aff5f1:disqus Beginning** ha ha who’s the hooker now?

    • Andersdauter

When a black man says what? Has soul for a white guy? That is not racist! Soul music is associated with black people. Phil Collins does have a lot of soul. So does a lot of white musicians. It’s like saying Jimmy Hendrix could rock out for a black guy. Give me a break. Soul music, Rhythm and Blues…not all white people can sing soul music!

  • Hmrunner

    It is a racist!

  • Kimfield07

Racist no matter who would say it black or white it sends the wrong message….

    • DILLIGAF98

The message that what? White people and black people clearly have different tones to their voices and “soul” is mostly attributed to black people. Get over it! I’ll say it loud- white people do not normally have “soul” in their voice. Nobody said it was bad. Just different.

      • MESSAGE!!!

Thank you….I can’t believe that people are turning this into a Cee-Lo was being racist type of thing. America is really screwed up. And I when I say that, I mean blacks as as well.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VMCV5GRJ4CFE6P6R3QCENDBF3I Peter

What don’t black people normally have then? Why don’t you see that your generalizations are the source of the same ignorance as any white power advocate, there is no general differences between the races, only wide and awesome variance.  So if we make generalizations based on race as not being racist,  would it be appropriate to say to someone, you study in school well for a black man! You play sports well for an asian man! No because these are simply cultural markers and have nothing to do with race.
Same with “soul”. They are small minded stereotypes that we right here are continuing by Cee Lo’s comments.
The distance your ancestors were from the sun, therefore how much vitamin D and protection from the sun’s rays their bodies needed ( and how much they choose a mate based on certain color preferences) are the only differences between human beings according to science. Genetic variations are across the board when it comes to different colored human beings. The cultures that developed in the different areas of the world are very different and varied however. That is the source of our so called “racial” differences. You perpetuate what Dr King and many others spoke against long ago, truly look past the skin and look at the character of the person as their “color”. You want your fair, not a true fair for all people and that will always be racism no matter what color it comes from.  As soon as Americans (and the world) want to look at the forest through the trees we shall make progress together on this, until then it will remain largely “us” vs “them” in race, perpetuated by all sides. Are we different? Of course but don’t be fooled like a ignorant white supremacist (or any other kind) that it is based on race.
You should consider the implications of what you are saying than so easily write it off as nothing. Most uneducated people here will attack me for my comments above but just to save you small thinkers the time, there is no question that black men can study well,  asian men can play sports well, and white men can have soul! Its all in the variation of life!

        • DAZSIA18

The whole point is that he wasnt intentionally trying to sound racist,, so no matter what anyone has to say about it, it is the truth that black people sing with soul MAJORITY of the time so everything else you are referring to is completely irrelevant…you guys are taking a compliment and turning it into a negative..GET OVER IT

  • AmandaLark0780

    Agreed he should say sorry.

  • Joliee

Lets be honest, you know that some black people get angry when the tables are turned. So i guess  its just a matter of time where whites starts crying for racism when we say something that sounds offensive. No more white guys cant dance, And “You” people comments because we do the same.

    • Jamin21

      tru silence the comments

  • JustThinking

Cee Lo teenagers are watching shows like The Voice and you should set an example for them. Please apologize to your fans for your comment.

    • DILLIGAF98

What do you suggest he says? I’m sorry. All white men do have soul in their voices. Because we believe that huh?

    • WHATSONMYMIND

IF YU WANNA REFER TO IT AS SETTING AN EXAMPLE THEN HE IS SETTING A GOOD ONE BY SAYING WHITE MEN CAN ALSO HAVE SOUL SO THAT IS TELLING THE KIDS THAT THEY CAN BE WHATEVER THEY PLEASE NO MATTER WHAT COLOR THEY ARE

  • Yrt06

Nice to see Racism is alive and well in America thanks to the media! Cee Lo say sorry so we can move on….

  • JuanM52

Wow…Thats alot of 50/50 on this comment…..Lets just say he didn’t mean for it to be racist but it was. Now lets move on…..

  • W82TXT

    Shame on Cee Lo

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LKQE4UQRBBVNOIRAL4EB2SPCWI Jen

So who came up with the term “blue-eyed soul”?  Don’t see folks black or white having a problem with that!  I don’t believe it was meant as a racial insult.  Phil Collins is more associated with pop or rock not so much soul.  Dude just added a soulful twist to a song that’s never been done in that manner. Worked up?  Nah.

  • Not Having It

If you don’t have soul…you don’t have it!!! Poof be gone! Some got it and some don’t!

  • Bloomno2012

It’s interesting that Cee-Lo is being accused of being racist for remarking that a white singer’s voice had a quality that is commonly heard in a genre of music that WHITE PEOPLE coined for black singers! Soul music, R&B, these are genres that the predominantly white music industry coined for black artists back in the 40′s and 50′s to separate them from music for white audiences. Come on people, know your own history.

    • Jamin21

@63a92b4e1e4788b3fe11bb8b170a8eb3:disqus I know my history! But Cee lo needs to realize those comments aren’t needed.

      • Tysking18

He is a judge on a contest show…he’s supposed to give his opinions.

  • Camnwnt

    Racist!

    • Tysking18

      How?

  • Jamin21

    Agreed it’s racist!

  • Andersdauter

Soul music is a popular music genre that originated in the United States in the 1950s and early 1960s, combining elements of African American gospel music and rhythm and blues. Not all white people can sing soul music…that’s just the reality of things! What he said was not racist, just the truth. I know a couple…but that comment was not racist!

  • wa-diddy

Racism is a term used to define the social, economic, and human rights abuse of one race by another.  Many caucasians try to equate individual acts of ignorance like this with what was done to the African American race as a whole.  Obviously, this makes no sense, but neither does racism.  If African Americans were to subject caucasians to the same systematic oppression, then u can accuse them of racism.  Anything less is nothing more than whining

    • Tysking18

      Thank you!! Very well put.

  • HaHa

Black people gave music soul. R&B is blues music. Rap is music from the black struggle. its not racist its the truth. ask Elvis, Adele, & Justin (either one) who inspired them to sing and dance how they do.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RJZIIG4F3OJXVYEJI4X6U7S5BE Stanley

Cee Lo was right certain artist are more soulful than others.  It doesn’t mean the artist isn’t good if he’s not soulful. Queen wasn’t soulful that were rock n roll.  Marvin Gaye was soulful and not a Rock Artist.  WTF stop trying to play revere discrimination.  Cee Lo made a point from a artist standpoint.  A true racist would say something like no white artist are soulful or white people can’t sing……If I’m Cee Lo I’d just give them a copy of “F—  U”.

  • Bubbah

I wish Cee Lo would tell Aguilera that she too tries to imitate female black singers.  She may have been told that, and decided to “get even” by letting Jesse go!

  • skilletblonde

Cee Lo owes an apology alright.  But it is not to Phil Collins.  The apology should go to all the great black singers- who heard him say Phil Collins has soul.  There is nothing soulful about Phil Collins. I don’t know what part of his fat anatomy Cee Lo pulled that ridiculous tale from.

As far as some fans touting his comments as racist, how do they  think black people feel about the usurper Elvis Pressley being crowned king of their music?  Now that’s racist!

    • NVAdamzz

      LMFAO!!

  • 38dubbldeez

    not racist just true

  • itsallaboutRomie

Soul its  a type of music, and not a lot of white people sing that , he means !!! its not like pop music!! understand , its not racist at all , its real!! i love Phil Collins and im black!!

how is that racist??? 1st off soul comes from “BLACK FOLKS ONLY”…Soul music originally came from slaves..it was during their freedom songs that soul music was born…so i dont know what the fk they’re talking about racist…if a white guy sings soul it is a shock…so WTF?!!!!…white ppl just wanna find anything to argue about so they can justify their racist tendencies..GTFOHWTBS

  • Watashiwa84

First of all I know everyone saw that episode where adam levine said he didn’t expect to see a white guy when he turned his chair around. why he needed to point that out I don’t know and then christina joined in and was acting like she was surprised he was white too and then cee-lo said his tidbit and they were going back and forth about who the guy should pick and then christina was like I may not look like cello but I have soul, so if anyone made race a issue it was adam levine then christina and then cello, so EVERYONE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT IT, Eat one.

  • Jamin21

Yes that is racist…Shut your mouth Cee Lo

  • Karma21

    Racist! Agreed!

This is stupid. I am white and I see this as him trying to be nice. He can’t point out someone is white?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/T23BLFUSRH2UCN46LLIKPG5IQ4 DeeOne

That’s what I’m talking about… Thats why they say, a person is smart, but people are Dumb as Hell

  • JE

People are overreacting. Cee Lo’s comment was not racist at all, he was just speaking his opinion. How many of us had said the same thing when we talk with family or friends? Black people are known to sing soul music & to have a lot of soul, not white people. Soul music originated in the black community.   When caucasion singers like Teena Marie or Lisa Stansfield sing, we all say they sound black. The black community supports them because we identify with that sound.  I like Phil Collins, but I don’t even consider him a soulful singer. Jamiroquai, Taylor Dayne, Allen Stone, Crystal Lewis, & Amy Winehouse, even Adele are soul singers.Their music crosses color lines, & no one cares what color they are. The soulfulness of their music can not be denied.

  • Soligmorgon

Phil Collins is the truth, so he was actually paying him a compliment. If you try to channel Rod Stewart, Phil or even David Bowie, you better be sure of your game.

  • http://twitter.com/Jamaicangirl81 Elise C

err… they say this all the time tho.. bleh, people need to lighten the hell up.

  • chevonne22

OMG it’s the same thing as saying, “You hit the heart for a Black Country singer.”  Not racist and I’m Black.

  • Cathy

That’s why I don’t watch that show!  It is all full of crap! I believe it is all fixed.  I don’t like CeeLo or Christina!!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/T23BLFUSRH2UCN46LLIKPG5IQ4 DeeOne

Half of you MF’s are in the dark, thinking that’s a racist comment… Wait a minute, they may think I’m a racist saying someone that’s not black is in the dark, hahaha! And I bet the one’s that are saying it’s racist is not black, I’ll put money on it… just weak

  • John

umm… that’s a joke, not really racist. although, flip side of that same thing happens if a white dude say something about any other race. fact is, we’re too PC at the dumbest times for our own good. Leave comments like this alone, no need to build attention to things like this. Show sucks anyway.

    • Rose

I agree, Phil Collins does have a lot of soul a nd I think Antonio Banderas is very handsome and has been overlooked, but who really cares. There is so much more important things going on today.

  • Carrollyolinda

    That is not Racism.

Funny joke huh. Cee lo is articulate for a black guy – vocabulary more then 4 letter words. Funny stuff bringing race into it huh.

  • Sherrietc

Racist because he said that?  Please…it could have been worse!

AAAAh come on people.  If someone says Justin Timberlake dances good for white guy it means nothing.  It’s a promo for THE VOICE.  Was so far from racism!!!  I’m a big Phil Collins fan and Justin’s decent too.
