Ava DuVernay, the first black woman to win the Best Director award at the Sundance Film Festival, spoke to 24Wired.TV about the black film industry. Specifically, she discussed the ongoing debate on whether Tyler Perry is making the right kind of films for a black audience. Further, she shared some career advice for up-and-coming filmmakers. Ava’s distribution company AFFRM releases its third film, Andrew Dosunmu’s 2011 Sundance favorite Restless City, beginning April 27, 2012.
