NBC Universal’s Battleship premieres Friday, May 18th. An action packed movie that is based off the popular childhood Hasbro game Battleship and it stars Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, and Rihanna. The movie is about a fleet of ships (same fleet as the game) that are forced to battle with species of another planet to save the world. In addition to the battle, it also follows Lieutenant Alex Hooper’s journey to mature and accept his natural talent as a leader.
Leading up to the premiere, everyone has been anticipating Rihanna’s debut role in a major film. Even thoughher speaking parts were at a minimum, every time she spoke in the movie there was a comedic aspect to her character. Bold, brave, and comical are a few traits that we see in the movie as well as in her music. Her performance was not award worthy but it is a great start for an acting career and the her stardom did not overshadow the other prominent cast members in the film.
Overall, the movie was a great attempt by Hasbro and NBC Universal. The action scenes and detailed graphics kept you entertained throughout the movie and you even wanted to pay attention to the Lieutenant Hooper’s struggle and him overcoming his lack of commitment to anything serious. If you’re familiar with the childhood game, it will help you appreciate the movie even more and how they incorporated the importance of finding the right coordinates just like the game. Although, there was a moment in the end with an old crew coming to the rescue that was a little unrealistic. It is not worth all of the hype that it has been receiving such as Avengers but if you spend your $10 at the theater, it will not be a waste and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Battleship 2 in the near future.
