Gabby Douglas won the gold medal in the women’s all-around gymnastics competition at the London Olympics. The 16-year-old is the first black female to win the event. Before her rise to stardom, her mother refused to let her quit practicing gymnastics away from home after Douglas asked to return due to homesickness.
